I think that the range of spiritual responses to Wendy's death has been extraordinary. We have those who believe that God allowed her to die, those who don't, and those who don't think that God really figured into the equation at all. As a seminary student and future minister, I have really struggled with what I believe God's response to Wendy's death to be. There are those who have reassured me that God has a plan, that Wendy died for some higher purpose that we cannot understand. As someone who does not believe that God sanctions violence in any form, I cannot accept this. For me, God is with me in this in that God cries and mourns and grieves along with me. God knows my sorrow because God created Wendy and loves her just as much as I do, actually more. God wanted Wendy to be a secret agent or a prosthetic limb designer or a filmmaker or any of the six thousand things that Wendy wanted on a daily basis. God wanted all the beautiful seeds that God planted in Wendy to come to fruition. If we want to blame someone for this tragedy, let us blame the true perpetrator, not a kind and loving God. That's just what I think.
