Because my main link to Wendy was through Karen, I always took special notice of the sisterly bond between them, and I know without a doubt that the two of them were closer - and are probably still closer - than any two sisters I've ever known.
I've known the Solteros since Karen joined my 7th grade class at Hockaday some 14 years ago. Karen has been a great friend from the get-go, and I can remember countless times when I enjoyed the hospitality of her family at parties, sleepovers, and the like. Interspersed throughout those visits, of course, there was also Wendy - and I recall her as a beautiful, unique, and loving individual who - unlike the little sisters of some of my other friends - would never shy away from hanging out with the older girls... and Karen would never have dreamed of asking her to. The last time Karen visited me up in Palo Alto, she went on and on about how wonderful it was to have Wendy around, and how great Wendy was doing.
Karen - I hope you know how apparent your love for Wendy is and always has been. I hope you know how your goodness to her must have mattered. And know also that it has been obvious from the beginning of our friendship that Wendy returned these kindesses and that depth of love to you. I feel extremely blessed to have known Wendy, to have witnessed that special relationship. Although the world has truly been robbed of her potential, we should all count ourselves lucky to have known Wendy, a special child who in only 22 short years was able to make such a profound impact on so many lives. Some people live to be 100 and never come close to making the difference Wendy has.
To the family: Please accept the condolences of my family...though I cannot make it to the service, my mother will be there. I am so, so sorry for your loss.
