It is not easy to write this. Gene has been the strong one for the web site. I will try to do better. Wendy--or as most of you know I frequently called her "Petunia" from the time she was little. she always reminded me of a petunia and I cannot tell you just why. It was always a joke that we went through the times when I had to try and not call her Petunia when her friends were around. Then, I finally caught on to that and by that time Wendy would laugh and tell me it was "OK" to call her Petunia in front of her friends!! Mom's are hard to train!! There are so many wonderful stories, memories, thoughts about Wendy. All of her friends meant so much to her. As you all know, we treasure your stories of time spent with our Wendy. To all those who reached out to help support and sustain us during this terrible tragedy, thank you. Keep it up -- we need it! We know all of you were reaching out to us through your own strife and that takes courage! Be proud! Wendy would want you to! To Occidental College -- thank you from our hearts that you have decided to go forward with Wendy's senior art show and present her degree in May! Wendy was so excited about the prospect of graduating! Our last conversation that evening included her talking about the "next phase of her life after graduation". When Karen, Gene and I stood up at the church to face those gathered to celebrate her life, the site of the filled santuary was testimony to those who knew and loved our family and the emotion that generates is indescribable. The church had suggested that we might only need the chapel for the service. We felt the service would be bigger than the 200 or so that the chapel could hold but we never dreamed it would fill the santuary. As you all know, Wendy always loved a celebration and I KNOW she was standing beside the 3 of us or I never would have gotten through my words. I KNOW she loved seeing all of you there for her, for us and for yourselves. To our family -- the Richards and the Solteros! We thank you for everything!! You were all here when we needed you and still are and we hold that knowledge very close to our hearts. The Richards family has endured far too much in the last 10 months with the loss of Wendy and her cousin, Debbie, last December from a tragic accident. To Walt, Lisa and Highland Park United Methodist Church -- thank you for helping us put together what we wanted to celebrate Wendy's life. We opened our hearts and let Wendy guide us on all the choices and it all happened! To Bill and Carol -- THANK YOU! There are no words to cover what you did for us in securing Wendy's couch location. I do not think we could have endured having her far from us. From the moment we asked you to look into it, we knew in our hearts you would "make it happen" -- and you did!! Most important -- what would I do without the 2 rocks in my life -- Gene and Karen. Please forgive me, but I truly believe that Gene and Karen are the "best of the best" in the categories of Daddy and sister. Wendy and Karen shared a bond that is rarely found in sisters. If one was hurting, the other was right there! They might be frustrated but they were always trying to "make it right". Karen came home that evening from work to find Wendy asleep on her couch curled up with Karen's dog. For some of our friends that do not know, Karen and Wendy shared a house for the past 2 1/2 years while Karen got her master's degree. Karen had only been in her new apartment for 1 1/2 months! Wendy also called us that evening and talked with us for about 1 1/2 hours. Of course, she did it on her sister's phone bill! I kidded her about it and she said "oh well, I'll handle it!" There are so many people to respond to and we will in a more personal manner. I just wanted to send my message to all. A dear friend told me the other day that this is like a lump and it never goes away. The lump just moves around -- some days it is in your throat, sometimes your knee, sometimes your elbow, etc., and that is so true (thank you Em). We will all go on as that is what Wendy would want us to do. We will all laugh again! We most certainly will cry! Keep in touch, stopping by means a great deal to us, sharing your stories of Wendy and keeping us appraised of what is new in your lives, postings on the web site -- all of it will give us strength. As Wendy would tell me -- "that's enough for now Mom" -- so until my next note -- love to all -- Wendy's mommy
