Lately, I have been inundated with Wendy. I have her senior picture in my room, and the image is always with me. She was thoroughly beautiful, inside and out. I have been striving to keep Wendy in my life, by living up to her in a way. I have given myself freedom to express myself, I have allowed spontaneity, and I try to do all things with love and joy at the root of them. At times I think to myself, "What would Wendy do?" (We should make bracelets- WWWD? ! ) Right now I am learning about the strength of Wendy's character, about what was important to her, and how wonderful are the people that surrounded her. Right now, I am coping with the loss of Wendy by living my life with fuschia hair. I wish I could fully describe to you the reactions I experience. In some places, nobody blinks an eye. In others, people are ready to judge. It may sound naive, but this is a lesson in self acceptance. I have learned that Wendy knew and loved herself first, and that made it easy for her to love all of us. She loved the essence of people. Wendy’s essence captivated others, and conquered them to break down their walls. To be so distinctive that you literally transcend categorization, refuse to color inside the lines, and define your own life isn’t exactly the easiest path. It is an admirable one. I may be faced with expectations and convention, but because of Wendy, I am not going to settle. I will not choose an easy path that could compromise my dreams. Because of Wendy, I am going to be true to myself, and do what I love. (Nevermind that I’m not sure what that is yet.) Because of Wendy, I am soul searching until I find out. Because of Wendy, I know what a strong woman looks like. I know resilience and integrity. Because of all of you, I will never forget.
